I’m originally from the UK and I love Christmas, but as I’ve been living in a tropical country for the last six years, it’s been a long time since I celebrated a “traditional” Christmas. Every year I keep saying I’ll go back for xmas, especially now I have two kids who have yet to experience Christmas outside the tropics, but somehow it never happens.
This year instead of bemoaning the fact that I’ll be missing out on snow, Christmas trees, lights, turkey and xmas specials on TV, I decided I was going to embrace our unique situation and typed “Alternative Christmas” into Google to see what would come up. Aha! I’m not alone! In fact there is so much alternative Christmas stuff out there it’s quite exciting – tree, food, parties, decorations, holidays – you name it. It seems that there are many people looking for a way to celebrate December 25th in an unusual way. And so the idea for this website was born.
We’re already well into October and I know if I was in the UK right now, the shops would already be full of Christmas-themed food, gift sets and the jingly adverts have been probably playing on TV for a couple of weeks already. Many people have become jaded with the fact that Christmas seems to start earlier every year and causes more stress than it’s worth. If this sounds like you, you might be looking for an alternative way to spend the day that doesn’t involve getting into debt buying presents and maybe doing something worthwhile like volunteering for charity or just spending a fun day with your family.
Others are just bored of the same old routine and want to shake things up and do something new. Maybe you’re really into design and you don’t like the idea of destroying the look of your modern home with tacky fake trees and tinsel. I’ve found some great alternatives to traditional Christmas trees and modern and stylish decorations to suit any taste.
I hope you do find something to entertain, inspire or inform you here and maybe a little something useful that can spice up or transform your Christmas.
